Alva L. Hager

Alva Lysander Hager (born October 29, 1850 in Jamestown , New York , †  January 29, 1923 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1899 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1859, Alva Hager came to Cottonville , Jackson County , Iowa with his parents . In 1863 the family moved to Jones County . Hager attended public schools in Monticello and Anamosa . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and his admission as a lawyer in 1875, he began to work in Greenfield in his new profession.

Politically, Hager was a member of the Republican Party . In 1891 he was a member of the Iowa Senate . A year later he headed the Republican Party Congress at the state level. In 1892 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Iowa . There he stepped on March 4, 1893 to succeed the Democrat Thomas Bowman . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . At that time the Philippines came under American administration. The former Kingdom of Hawaii also became part of the United States.

In 1898, Hager failed to nominate his party for another term. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. In 1901 he moved his residence and his office to Des Moines. In this city he worked in the banking business between 1911 and 1918; he died there on January 29, 1923.
