Stanley L. Greigg

Stanley Lloyd Greigg (born May 7, 1931 in Ireton , Iowa , † June 13, 2002 in Salem , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1967 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stanley Greigg attended Morningside College in Sioux City until 1954 . He then studied until 1956 at Syracuse University in Syracuse ( New York ). Greigg served in the US Navy between 1957 and 1959 . He then taught rhetoric and history himself at Morningside College. He was also dean of a faculty there.

Greigg was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1961 he was elected to the Sioux City council and in 1964 he became mayor there. In the 1964 congressional election, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Iowa . There he took over from the Republican Charles B. Hoeven on January 3, 1965 . His election victory was part of a nationwide trend in favor of the Democrats. Two years later he was defeated by Wiley Mayne . Therefore, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1965. This was overshadowed by the events surrounding the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War .

Between 1967 and 1969 Greigg was director of the regional branch of the postal ministry ( Office of Regional Administration ). From 1970 to 1972 he served as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee . In this capacity, he was one of the first to be confronted with the Watergate affair on June 17, 1972 , because the burglars into the Watergate Hotel also raided his secretary's rooms. Greigg then filed a criminal complaint. The case resulted in the resignation of President Richard Nixon in August 1974 .

In 1972 Greigg supported George McGovern's presidential campaign . He also became director of the Lawrence F. O'Brien Center at Dag Hammarskjold College in Columbia . Between 1975 and 1998 he was Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Relations in the Budget Division of Congress. Stanley Greigg died in Salem in June 2002 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
