history

The town of Ireton in Reading Township , Iowa was founded in 1882. The area was chosen because of a railroad nearby. It was part of several English settlements, including Alton Le Mars and Hospers . In 1890 the city was declared independent. It supplied the local farmers with general stores, horseshoe smiths, and equipment stores. It was also a place from which the crops could be transported by rail. After the railroad was removed, various harvest shops and many different agriculture-related shops still existed.

The city was named after Henry Ireton , who served under Oliver Cromwell in the English Civil War. He was also Cromwell's son-in-law .

The original inhabitants of Ireton were mainly English and Irish. Later, when the larger Dutch settlements in Sioux Center and Orange City were established, more and more Dutch came to Ireton.

Many of Ireton's original residents were veterans and their sons from the Civil War . There is an old military trail that runs close to the town. There were various soldiers who died on this path and were buried in a cemetery which was near a hill on the road. The Ireton Cemetery was built around these graves and now also contains a bronze statue depicting a soldier facing south to commemorate the veterans.
