Orange City was founded in 1870 by Dutch settlers, a fact that is commemorated with the annual tulip festival in May. In 1872 the county seat and court of Calliope (part of Hawarden since 1893 ) were relocated here. In 1884 Orange City was incorporated as an independent municipality.
