course

The Floyd River has its origin in northwest O'Brien County near the town of Sanborn . From there it flows mainly in a south-westerly direction through the counties of Sioux , Plymouth and Woodbury . He passes through the towns of Sheldon , Hospers , Alton , Le Mars , Merrill and Hinton . At Merrill, the Floyd River receives its largest tributary, the approximately 40 miles long West Branch Floyd River . The West Branch rises at Boyden in northeast Sioux County and flows south through Plymouth County past Maurice and Struble . The Floyd River reaches Woodbury County near Sioux City.

The Floyd River had left its banks several times in the past, causing severe flooding in Sioux City in 1892 and 1953. For this reason, the river is the focus of high protection and river regulation measures.

Fish deaths occur again and again in the Floyd River - caused by the discharge of animal waste from slaughterhouses.
