William P. Wolf

William Penn Wolf (born December 1, 1833 in Harrisburg , Stark County , Ohio , † September 19, 1896 in Tipton , Iowa ) was an American politician . Between 1870 and 1871 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Wolf attended public schools in his home country and Holbrook Seminary . In 1856 he moved to Cedar County , Iowa. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1859, he began working in his new profession in Tipton. He was also a school councilor in his new home.

Politically, Wolf was a member of the Republican Party . From 1863 to 1864 he was a member of the Iowa House of Representatives . Wolf also took part in the civil war as a captain for two years . He worked for the Treasury in 1865 and served on the Iowa Senate from 1867 to 1869 . After the death of Congressman William Smyth Wolf was elected in the second district of Iowa in a by-election to his successor in the US House of Representatives. In Washington, DC he finished between December 6, 1870 and March 3, 1871, the beginning of his predecessor's term of office. Aylett R. Cotton had already been elected in the regular congressional elections . Wolf had to hand over his mandate to Cotton in March 1871.

After his brief stint in the House of Representatives, William Wolf returned to work as a lawyer. Between 1881 and 1885 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Iowa; in 1884 he acted as its speaker . Wolf was a district judge in the 18th District of Iowa from 1894 until his death in September 1896.
