Walter I. Smith

Walter Inglewood Smith (born July 10, 1862 in Council Bluffs , Iowa , †  January 27, 1922 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1900 and 1911 he represented the state of Iowa in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Smith attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1882, he began to work in Council Bluffs in his new profession. Between 1890 and 1900 he was a judge in the 15th District of Iowa. Politically, Smith was a member of the Republican Party .

After the resignation of Congressman Smith McPherson , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as his party's candidate in the ninth constituency of Iowa . There he took up his new mandate on December 3, 1900. Since he was confirmed in each of the following regular congressional elections, Smith could remain in Congress until his resignation on March 15, 1911 . During his time in the US House of Representatives, construction of the Panama Canal began under American leadership.

On March 15, 1911, Walter Smith resigned his parliamentary mandate after he had been appointed by US President William Howard Taft to succeed Willis Van Devanter as a judge on the Federal Court of Appeals for the eighth district. Smith held this position until his death in January 1922.
