Rudolf Elle

Rudolf Elle (born March 12, 1911 in Weimar ; † February 23, 1952 ) was a German orthopedic surgeon , head of the Eisenberg Forest Hospital and professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1950 he received the award of Honored Doctor of the People , the highest honor that a doctor could achieve in the German Democratic Republic ( GDR ). The Waldkliniken Eisenberg in Thuringia bore his name from 1952 to 2017 .

life and work

Rudolf Elle attended elementary school and the high school in Weimar from 1917 to 1930. He began his medical studies in 1930 at the University of Jena . After five semesters he moved to Graz, then to Hamburg, where he received the state examination and did his doctorate with a thesis on patellar luxation at the clinic of Prof. Sudeck. From 1937 to 1939 he worked as an internist in the sanatorium Dr. Vogler in Braunlage , then until 1945 as a scientific assistant at the orthopedic university clinic in Hamburg. At the same time he did military service as a doctor in France, Greece and Russia from 1940 to 1944.

From August 1, 1945, Rudolf Elle headed the Waldkrankenhaus Eisenberg as chief physician. In 1950 he was given a teaching position for orthopedics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and was named "Honored Doctor of the People". In the five and a half years of his activity, he turned the former barracks into a high-performance hospital and - in close cooperation with the state - a center for war casualties. Despite financial difficulties, he managed to set up various departments, including a. for amputees, people with nerve injuries, dystrophics or osteomyelitis. In addition, Elle set up a home for the physically injured in the vicinity of the hospital, which was quickly expanded with support from industry and the Central Office for Labor and Social Welfare. There, people with physical disabilities were given the opportunity to retrain and complete vocational training. Elle died in 1952 of complications from gastrointestinal atonia. In recognition of his services, the Eisenberg Forest Hospital was renamed the "Rudolf Elle" Forest Hospital on November 1, 1952.

The focus of his scientific work was on the field of orthopedic technology. Among other things, he examined the pressure conditions inside the socket of prostheses. In doing so, he succeeded in improving the stems and residual limb beds of the prostheses and creating the so-called “Dr. Elle-Haftprothese-Eisenberg ”. He has also published numerous papers on orthopedic topics, including a. the habilitation thesis on the subject of "Amputee and Prostheses".
