John Culver

John Chester Culver (born August 8, 1932 in Rochester , Minnesota - † December 26, 2018 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Iowa in both chambers of Congress .

Minnesota-born John Culver moved his family to Cedar Rapids , Iowa when he was a child. He completed his studies at Harvard University and Harvard Law School successfully; during his studies he played on the Harvard football team alongside Edward Kennedy . He also spent a year at Cambridge University . From 1955 to 1958 he served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps .

From 1963 he worked as a lawyer in Cedar Rapids; however, he began to be enthusiastic about politics early on. In 1964 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the 2nd  electoral district of Iowa , where he remained from January 3, 1965 to January 3, 1975.

In 1974, Culver did not stand for re-election, but instead successfully ran for a seat in the US Senate , which was vacant after the resignation of Harold Hughes . He prevailed against the Republican David M. Stanley and took up his mandate from January 3, 1975. In 1980 he ran for re-election, but was defeated with only 45.5 percent of the vote to the Republican Chuck Grassley , who came to 53.5 percent.

As a result, Culver worked as a lawyer in Washington . In 2000 he co-authored the first comprehensive biography of former US Vice President Henry A. Wallace . His eldest son, Chet, was the governor of Iowa from 2007 to 2011 .
