Joni Ernst
Joni Kay Ernst (born July 1, 1970 in Red Oak , Iowa ) is an American politician and since January 2015 the junior US Senator for the state of Iowa. Prior to her election to the United States Senate, she was a member of the Iowa Senate from 2011 to 2014 . Ernst is a member of the Republican Party and the first woman to represent Iowa in the Senate.
Career
After graduating from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology , Ernst studied at Columbus State University, where she received a master's degree in public administration. Ernst is an officer in the Iowa Army National Guard and served in Kuwait for 14 months during the Iraq War . In 2004, Ernst was elected an Auditor for Montgomery County, Iowa , and was confirmed in that office in 2008. In 2011 she was elected to the Iowa Senate by by -election and was re-elected in 2012. In July 2013 Ernst announced to compete for the vacant seat as senator for Iowa and defeated in the election in November 2014 the congressman and Democrat Bruce Braley.
Political positions
Ernst is an opponent of stricter gun rules and rejects a nationwide minimum wage against the background of the different cost of living in the various states. She also believes that the role of the state in combating climate change should be small. Ernst rejects same-sex marriages and is an opponent of abortion . In the course of the impeachment proceedings against President Trump, she confirmed the impression that the Ukraine interventions in question were aimed at discrediting the opposing candidate Joe Biden.
