Nathan Fellows Dixon continued his family's political tradition. His grandfather of the same name was already a US senator ; his father, who also went by the name Nathan Fellows Dixon , sat for Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .

After attending public schools in Westerly and the Phillips Academy in Andover , Dixon graduated from Brown University in 1869 and from Albany Law School in 1871 . When Congressman Jonathan Chace stepped down in January 1885 to replace the late Henry B. Anthony in the Senate, Dixon succeeded him in the House of Representatives in Washington . However, he only ended his term of office, which lasted until March 3, 1885; he was not nominated for election to the next Congress.

From 1885 to 1889, Dixon then sat in the Rhode Island Senate . In April 1889 he was re-elected to succeed Jonathan Chace, this time after his resignation as US Senator. His term of office lasted until March 3, 1895; again he was not a candidate in the next election. He then worked again as a lawyer and in the banking industry and died in Westerly in 1897.
