Robert Owens Tiernan (born February 24, 1929 in Providence , Rhode Island , † October 15, 2014 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1975 he represented the second constituency of the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Tiernan attended La Salle Academy and then until 1953 Providence College . He then studied until 1956 at the law school of the Catholic University in Washington, DC law. After his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession from 1956.

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1960 and 1967 he was an MP in the Rhode Island House of Representatives . After the death of Congressman John E. Fogarty on January 10, 1967, Robert Tiernan was elected his successor in Congress when the by-election was due . Tiernan took up his new office on March 28, 1967 and exercised it after three re-elections until January 3, 1975. In the run-up to the 1974 elections, his party did not nominate him for another term. Between 1975 and 1981 Tiernan was a member of the Federal Electoral Commission . Then he withdrew from politics. Most recently he lived in retirement in South Kingstown .
