Ronald Machtley

Ronald Keith Machtley (born July 13, 1948 in Johnstown , Cambria County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1989 and 1995 he represented the first constituency of the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Ronald Machtley graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1970 . Between 1970 and 1975 he was an active member of the Navy. After that he was a member of their reserve until 1995. After studying law at Suffolk University in Boston , he was admitted to the bar in 1978.

Machtley joined the Republican Party and was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1988 as its candidate in the first district of Rhode Island . There he replaced Fernand St. Germain from the Democratic Party on January 3, 1989 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1995 . In 1994 he decided not to run again. His seat then went to the Democrat Patrick Joseph Kennedy .

After serving in Congress, Machtley ran unsuccessfully for governor of Rhode Island. Since 1996 he has been President of Bryant University in Smithfield .
