Christopher Robinson (politician, 1806)
Christopher Robinson (born May 15, 1806 in Providence , Rhode Island , † October 3, 1889 in Woonsocket , Rhode Island) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the first constituency of the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .
Career
After elementary school, Robinson studied at Brown University in Providence until 1825 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1833, he began to practice in Woonsocket in his new profession. In 1854 he was elected Attorney General for the State of Rhode Island.
Robinson became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In 1858 he was elected as their candidate for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he replaced Nathaniel B. Durfee on March 4, 1859 . But since he lost to William Paine Sheffield in the following elections , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1861 . This time was overshadowed by the discussions and events leading up to the civil war.
The newly elected President Abraham Lincoln appointed Robinson as US ambassador to Peru . He held this office until 1866. In 1866 Robinson was a delegate to a meeting of the loyalists who had remained loyal to the Union in the civil war that had just ended. Christopher Robinson was married to Louisa Robinson (1819-1853). He died on October 3, 1889.
