history

The religious community of the Sisters of the Poor was founded by the Italian priest and Blessed Luigi Maria Palazzolo. He headed a church organization on the outskirts of Bergamo to help the poor, the sick and orphans, and he also took care of youth pastoral care . Together with the religious sister Teresa Gabrieli (1837-1908), who also became the first religious superior , he founded the congregation Sisters of the Poor on May 22, 1869, who take their vows according to the evangelical councils . With a papal decree , the community of sisters received their license to practice medicine on May 25, 1919 and initially developed primarily in Bergamo, Brescia and Vicenza . Further branches in central and southern Italy followed later.

After the end of the war, the reconstruction of the partially destroyed houses began, and hospitals and refreshment stations were also built. An infirmary was built to fight tuberculosis and the repatriation of the deported order members was organized. In 1977 the "Brotherhood of Don Luigi Palazzolo" was founded, which works for evangelization . She later became part of the religious community.
