Walter Russell Stiness (born March 13, 1854 in Smithfield , Rhode Island , † March 17, 1924 in Warwick , Rhode Island) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1915 and 1923 he represented the second constituency of the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Walter Stiness studied at Brown University in Providence between 1873 and 1874 . After a subsequent law degree at Boston University and his admission as a lawyer in 1877, he began to work in Providence in his new profession.

Politically, Stiness was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1878 and 1881 he was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives . From 1879 to 1885 he was also employed in the administration of the Rhode Island Court of Justice. From 1883 to 1885, Stiness served on the staff of Governor Augustus O. Bourn and from 1888 to 1891 he was his home state's railroad commissioner. At the same time he was from 1888 first deputy and from 1898 to 1913 actual military prosecutor ( Judge Advocate General ) of Rhode Island. Between 1904 and 1909 Stiness was a member of the State Senate . In 1909 he chaired a committee to review his state's laws, and from 1911 to 1914 he was also the state attorney for Rhode Island.

In 1914, Stiness was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second district of Rhode Island , where he replaced the Democrat Peter G. Gerry on March 4, 1915 . After he was re-elected in each of the following years, Stiness was able to complete a total of four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1923 . In 1922, he decided not to run again. After the end of his time in Congress, Stiness retired, which he spent in Warwick until his death in March 1924.
