James Langevin
James R. "Jim" Langevin (born April 22, 1964 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). Together with David Cicilline , he represents the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives . He is currently the only member of Congress with spinal cord injury .
James Langevin attended high school in Warwick and then studied at Rhode Island College in Providence, where he received his first degree . He later earned a Master of Public Administration at the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University .
At the age of 16, Langevin did a voluntary internship with the Warwick Police Department. When a shot was accidentally released from a gun, it hit the teenager, who was now paralyzed from the waist down. He has been using a wheelchair ever since.
James Langevin took his first political mandate in 1986 as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of Rhode Island. He acted as the committee's secretary. Two years later he was elected to the State House of Representatives for the first time , where he remained until 1994; then he took over the office of Secretary of State in the government of Rhode Island. He made a name for himself by fighting corruption in the administrative apparatus.
Since January 3, 2001, Langevin has represented his state in Washington . There he stands up for the interests of disabled people and comprehensive health care. He is also considered a pro-life democrat. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His most recent term runs until January 3, 2019. In the run-up to the 2008 presidential election , he supported Hillary Clinton . During her election campaign, he acted as an advisor on topics such as stem cell research and people with disabilities. Langevine is or was a member of the Armed Forces Committee and the Intelligence Committee and three sub-committees. He also belongs or was a member of the Congressional Arts Caucus . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell .
