biography

Patrick Kennedy was born to Ted Kennedy and Virginia Joan Bennett . He is thus a nephew of the US President John F. Kennedy and a member of the extensive Kennedy family . He has an older brother, Edward Moore Kennedy (* 1961); his sister Kara Kennedy Allen , born in 1960, died in September 2011.

He graduated from high school at Phillips Academy in Andover , which he graduated in 1986. He studied at Georgetown University and Providence College in Providence , from which he graduated in 1991 with a degree in social science.

He was elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1988 . In November 1994 he won the Congress election against Republican Kevin Vigilante and received a seat in the House of Representatives . In these congressional elections , which resulted in dramatic Democrats' losses, he was one of only four candidates from his party to win a seat previously held by the Republicans. Since then, Kennedy has been regularly re-elected, most recently in 2008 with 68.6 percent of the vote against Republican Jonathan Scott. In February 2010 he announced that he would not run for re-election in the congressional elections in the fall of the same year.

In the House of Representatives, Kennedy was first a member of the natural resources and armed forces committees, then on the influential investment committee and was primarily involved in health policy.

Patrick Kennedy has had psychological and addiction problems for a long time. On May 4, 2006 at 2:45 am he drove his car into one of the barricades on the congress building. Since the police took him away without taking an alcohol test, even though he had previously driven serpentine lines, the allegation of special treatment arose. At a press conference a day later he declared his drug addiction and that he was planning a renewed withdrawal in the Mayo Clinic to undertake. After Kennedy left Congress, he devoted himself as a lawyer and author to the struggle for better care for the mentally ill through the American health system. In 2013 he founded “The Kennedy Forum” and in 2016, together with Newt Gingrich and Van Jones, the “Advocates for Opioid Recovery”.

Patrick Kennedy has been married to the teacher Amy Petitgout since July 15, 2011, who is also politically active. She brought a three-year-old daughter into the relationship from a previous marriage.

Patrick and Amy have four children together: Owen Patrick Kennedy (* April 15, 2012), Nora Kara Kennedy (* November 19, 2013), Nell Elizabeth Kennedy (* November 29, 2015), Marshall Patrick Kennedy (* May 27, 2018 ).

On February 11, 1997 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic at the level of Grand Officer.
