Claudine Schneider (born March 25, 1947 in Clairton , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1981 and 1991 she represented the second constituency of the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Claudine Schneider was born Claudine Cmarda on March 25, 1947. She first attended the public schools in her home country. She later studied at the University of Barcelona in Spain , Rosemont College in Pennsylvania and Windham College in Vermont . She studied urban development and planning at the University of Rhode Island .

In 1973, she founded the Rhode Island Committee on Energy in Rhode Island . In 1974 she became director of the Conservation Law Foundation . In 1978 she was the federal commissioner for the coastal development program for Rhode Island. At the time, she was also the producer and host of television programs dealing with public affairs in the area.

Schneider joined the Republican Party . In 1980 she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second district of Rhode Island , where she succeeded Edward Beard of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1981 . After four re-elections, she was able to complete a total of five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1991 .

In 1990 she declined to run for the House of Representatives again. Instead, she ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . After her tenure in Congress was over, she served on the faculty of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . Today Claudine Schneider works in Boulder ( Colorado ) as an independent consultant, primarily on issues relating to environmental protection.
