David Cicilline (born July 15, 1961 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has represented the state of Rhode Island in the US House of Representatives since January 3, 2011 .

Life

Cicilline studied political science at Brown University in Providence, graduating magna cum laude in 1983 . He then went to Georgetown University , where he earned a Juris Doctor in law . Cicilline practiced law before being elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1995 . During this time he came out as a gay politician.

In November 2002 he was elected mayor of Providence to succeed Vincent Cianci with 84 percent of the vote; In 2006 he was confirmed in office. Since 2008 he has been President of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors , the association of Democratic Mayors in the United States.

On November 2, 2010, Cicilline succeeded in entering the United States House of Representatives, where he succeeded Patrick J. Kennedy for the first congressional constituency of Rhode Island in January 2011 . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. Its latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019.
