The Bishop Portier House was Michael Portier's home . It is located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Conti Street and Claiborne Street in Mobile , Alabama , United States, and is diagonally across from the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Cathedral Square. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Mobile . Perhaps the best preserved example of a Creole cottage in Mobile, the house, built around 1834, has some classic features.
history
Bishop Portier, the first Roman Catholic bishop of the then diocese, lived here from 1834 until his death in 1859. The house was designed by Claude Beroujon, an architecture student and nephew porter. Four successor porters lived here until 1906. Between 1870 and 1877 the priest and southern poet Abram Ryan lived in the north-western corner room on the second floor . The house was restored by the diocese in 1958 and again in 2007. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 26, 1970 .
description
The building is made of timber frame construction, which is clad with shingles , the veranda is tiled. The house has one and a half floors and a square floor plan. A central hall runs from the front to the rear. It has a gable roof that covers the front and back of the full length veranda and is supported by slender columns. The three ornate dormer windows have classic features. The central entrance is framed by pilasters, pillared beams , skylights and side windows.
