Elisha Mathewson

Elisha Mathewson (born April 18, 1767 in Scituate , Providence County , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations ; †  October 14, 1853 ) was an American politician ( Democratic-Republican Party ) who founded the state of Rhode Island in the US Senate represented.

After completing his academic training, Elisha Mathewson initially served as a justice of the peace in his hometown of Scituate. He was also active in agriculture. When James Fenner stepped down as a US Senator to become Governor of Rhode Island, Mathewson was elected to succeed him. He performed his mandate in Washington between October 26, 1807 and March 3, 1811.

After that he was mainly active as a farmer again. In 1821, Mathewson took over a political mandate as a member of the House of Representatives from Rhode Island and was also speaker of the House of Representatives . In 1822 he was a member of the State Senate . At the time of his death in October 1853, he was the oldest surviving former US senator.
