Jeremiah Brown Howell

Jeremiah Brown Howell (born August 28, 1771 in Providence , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , †  February 5, 1822 ibid) was an American politician who represented the state of Rhode Island in the US Senate .

Jeremiah Howell, born in Providence during the colonial days, whose father David Howell was a delegate to the Continental Congress , received his education at private schools. He then attended the College of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , now Brown University , and graduated there in 1789. As a result, he studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1793 and began practicing as a lawyer in Providence. He also joined the Rhode Island militia and made it up to brigadier general.

In 1810 Howell was elected to the United States Senate to succeed Elisha Mathewson , who was no longer running . As a member of the Democratic Republican Party , he took his mandate in Washington, DC from March 4, 1811 to March 3, 1817; during this time he was among other things chairman of the pension committee . He did not stand for re-election in 1816; he was succeeded by the federalist James Burrill . Howell died in Providence, his birthplace, five years after retiring from the Senate.
