Nathan Fellows Dixon (politician, 1774)

Nathan Fellows Dixon (* 13. December 1774 in Plainfield , Connecticut Colony ; †  29. January 1842 in Washington DC ) was an American politician of the Whig Party , of the state of Rhode Iceland in the Senate represented.

Dixon first attended a private school in his hometown, Plainfield Academy , before graduating from the College of Rhode Island in Providence , now Brown University , in 1799 . He studied law , was inducted into the bar in 1801 and then practiced as a lawyer in New London County , Connecticut. In 1802 he continued his legal career in Westerly , Rhode Island, where he also entered the banking industry. From 1829 until his death he was president of the Washington Bank there .

Dixon, who served with the rank of colonel in the state militia , first moved to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1813 ; He completed another session there in 1830. Finally, he represented his state from March 4, 1839 in the US Senate in Washington; there he was among other things committee chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims . He died during his tenure in January 1842 and was buried in Westerly.

His son of the same name sat for a total of ten years in the US House of Representatives for Rhode Island ; his son, in turn, who also bore the name Nathan Fellows Dixon , followed in his grandfather's footsteps and was a US Senator from 1889 to 1895.
