Joan Cererols i Fornells ( Spanish also: Juan Cererols Fornells ; * probably September 9, 1618 in Martorell ; † August 27, 1680 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Catalan Benedictine monk , composer and conductor of the Montserrat Monastery .

Life

From around 1626 onwards, Cererols received musical training at the Escolania de Montserrat choir school and learned to play the violin , double bass , harp and organ as well as composition . On September 6, 1636 he entered the monastery as a novice . In 1648 he went to Madrid during the Catalan uprising and became a member of the newly founded community of Montserrat there. After he returned to Montserrat around 1653, he took over the direction of all church music in the Montserrat monastery from his teacher Joan March and held this post until his death.

In addition to his work as a music teacher and choir director, Cererols created one of the most important and extensive works of the composer's school of Montserrat in the 17th century. His compositional style is polyphonic and likes to use the means of polychoralism . His outstanding works include two Requiem settings and the three-part (= twelve-part) Missa de Batalla , which belongs to the genre of the parody mass .
