Joan March , old Catalan Joan Marc , also Hispanicized Juan Marqués or Juan Marquéz , (* 1582 in Arbeca , † 1658 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Spanish Benedictine monk , composer and organist from the Catalan cultural area.

life and work

March received his musical training at the Escolania de Montserrat and entered the novitiate in 1596 . He completed his theological and musical studies in the monastery of St. Martin in Madrid . He succeeded Tomás Luis de Victoria as organist of the imperial monastery Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales near Madrid. In 1625 he returned to the Montserrat monastery and worked as a music teacher until 1641; his students included the composers Francesc Rossell , Jaume Vidal , Joan Cererols and Benet Soler, as well as the organist Pere Jorba . March is the first composer of the montserratin school whose works have come down to us in writing. He created a remarkable oeuvre of great quality, much of which has been lost.
