from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francesc Rossell , Spanish also Francisco Rosell , (* around 1630 in Barcelona ; † July 24, 1676 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Catalan choirmaster , organist and composer . Rossell was head of the Escolania de Montserrat from 1630 to 1676 .

life and work

Francesc Rossell entered the Montserrat monastery as a monk in 1643. It is not known whether he already completed part of his musical training in his hometown of Barcelona or whether he completed his entire training in the Montserrat monastery. He was a student of Joan Romanyà in Montserrat.

The musicologist Baltasar Saldoni shows Rossell's prestige as a composer and organist. In addition to his musical duties, Rossell served as novice master , sacristan and personal servant to the abbot . His compositions are not outdated [or only in a few exceptional cases]. The Gran Enciclopédia Catalana reports on three traditional four- to eight-part Villancicos of high artistic quality.
