Franz Bender (historian)

Franz Bender (born June 18, 1876 in Wissen (Sieg) ; † February 28, 1936 in Cologne ) was a German historian , librarian and university professor . As director, he headed the public libraries and reading rooms in Cologne.

Life

He was the son of the railroad official Julius Bender and his wife Elise nee Stahl. After attending school, Franz Bender studied at the university, where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a senior teacher at the grammar school on Kreuzgasse in Cologne and later as a university lecturer in Cologne. In Cologne he became the library director of the public libraries and reading halls. There he was appointed teacher and titular professor. In the First World War he was used as a senior military official. After reaching retirement age, he retired.

He was a member of the Cologne History Association and dealt intensively with the history of Cologne, which resulted in several monographs and essays.

family

Franz Bender married Gertrud in 1905, the daughter of the Cologne mayor O. Matthey and his wife Elise, née Braunstein. The children Gertrud (* 1906), Maria (* 1908) and Erich (* 1910) emerged from the marriage. The family lived in Cologne, Herwarthstrasse 22.
