Joan Romanyà

Joan Romanyà , OSB , Spanish also Juan Romaña , (* around 1615 or earlier in Piera ; † 1643 or later in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Catalan Benedictine monk , conductor , organist and composer of the Montserrat Monastery .

Live and act

Joan Romanyà came to the Montserrat monastery for musical training in 1623. He was trained by Father Joan Marc and was one of his outstanding students. 1632 he became a monk in the Benedictine abbey one.

From 1640 to 1650 Joan Romanyà was organist and conductor of the Montserrat monastery. In addition to the musical functions, Romanyà took on some administrative functions in the monastery. He was prior of Castellfollit and Riudebitlles . He was also a novice master . As a theologian, he was best known as a moral theologian .

Although the musicologist Baltasar Saldoni gives 1643 as the year of death for this monk of the Montserrat monastery, he is mentioned in a contract for the benefit of school children in the seminary of Our Lady of Montserrat in 1650 by Brother Jaume Martí i Marvà as one of the best living musicians of the monastery.

He wrote Gallardes and Toccatas for ceremonial occasions, none of which have been recorded.
