James Castle

James Nathan Castle (born May 23, 1836 in Shefford , Québec , Canada , †  January 2, 1903 in Stillwater , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Castle attended public schools in his Canadian homeland. In 1862 he moved to Afton , Minnesota. There he initially worked as a teacher. He also completed a law degree that he had already started in Canada. After being admitted to the bar, he started working in his new profession. In 1865 he moved his residence and office to Stillwater. In 1866, he succeeded his late brother as a district attorney in Washington County . In 1868 he was also an attorney for the Stillwater Ward.

Politically, Castle was a member of the Democratic Party . He was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1868, 1878, and 1882 . In the congressional election of 1890 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded Samuel Snider on March 4, 1891 . Since he refused to run again in 1892, Castle could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . During his tenure in the US House of Representatives, he chaired the Committee on Mileage .

After leaving Congress, James Castle retired from politics. In the years up to his death on January 2, 1903, he worked again as a lawyer. He was buried in his home, Stillwater.
