Elmer Ryan
Elmer James Ryan (born May 26, 1907 in Rosemount , Dakota County , Minnesota , † February 1, 1958 in Somerset , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1941 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Elmer Ryan attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1929, he began to work in South St. Paul in his new profession.
Politically, Ryan joined the Democratic Party . In 1936 and 1940 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions , at which President Franklin D. Roosevelt was each nominated for a further term. In the 1934 congressional election, Ryan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Minnesota Second Constituency . There he took over from Ray P. Chase on January 3, 1935 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1941 . During this time, many of the federal government's New Deal laws were debated and passed in Congress.
In the 1940 election, Elmer Ryan was defeated by Republican Joseph P. O'Hara . After leaving the US House of Representatives, he returned to work as a lawyer. During the Second World War he was an officer in the US Army between 1942 and 1945 . He rose to major in the legal department by the end of the war. After the war he worked as a lawyer again. Elmer Ryan died on February 1, 1958 in a car accident on Highway 35 near Somerset. He was buried in Rosemount.
