Charles Russell Davis (born September 17, 1849 in Pittsfield , Illinois , † July 29, 1930 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1925 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Davis and his father came to Le Sueur County in Minnesota as early as 1854 . There he attended public schools. At times he was also given private lessons. He then attended a business school in Saint Paul . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1872, he began to work in his new profession in St. Peter . Between 1878 and 1898, Davis served as the legal representative for the St. Peter Ward. From 1879 to 1889 and again between 1901 and 1903 he served as a district attorney in Nicollet County . He was also a captain in the Minnesota National Guard .

Politically, Davis was a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1889 and 1890 . He was then a member of the State Senate between 1891 and 1895 . In the congressional election of 1902 Davis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the third constituency of Minnesota, where he succeeded Joel Heatwole on March 4, 1903 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1925 . From 1921 to 1923 he was chairman of the budget committee. World War I fell during his time in Congress . At that time the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the constitution were discussed and passed. It was about the nationwide introduction of income tax, the direct election of US senators , the prohibition law and the nationwide introduction of women's suffrage .

In the 1924 election, Davis was not nominated by his party for another term in the US House of Representatives. He subsequently worked as a lawyer in Washington and St. Peter. Charles Davis died in Washington on July 29, 1930 and was buried in St. Peter.
