Martin Olav Sabo (born February 28, 1938 in Crosby , Divide County , North Dakota , † March 13, 2016 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 2007 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Martin Sabo attended Alkabo High School until 1955 and then Augsburg College in Minneapolis until 1959 . He then studied there until 1960 at the University of Minnesota . After completing his studies, Sabo decided to pursue a political career. He became a member of the Democratic Party , which in Minnesota merged into the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in 1944 .

Between 1960 and 1978, Sabo was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives ; from 1969 to 1972 he was parliamentary group leader of the Democrats and from 1973 to 1978 he acted as Speaker of the House, succeeding Aubrey W. Dirlam . Sabo was also a member of a commission that dealt with interstate relations within the United States ( Commission on Intergovernmental Relations ). He was also president of a national association of all parliamentary representations of the American states ( National Conference of State Legislatures ).

In 1978, Sabo was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded Donald M. Fraser on January 3, 1979 . After 13 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 14 consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 2007 . Between 1993 and 1995 he was chairman of the budget committee . Sabo was considered very liberal. In 2006 he decided not to run again.

Martin Sabo has worked for the Bipartisan Policy Center since 2008 . There he was the deputy head of a national project dealing with transport problems. Sabo was married to Sylvia Ann Lee; the couple had two children and six grandchildren.
