James "Jim" Louis Oberstar (* 10. September 1934 in Chisholm , Minnesota ; † 3. May 2014 in Potomac , Maryland ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and from 1975 to 2011 member of the US House of Representatives for Minnesota .

biography

After attending Chisholm High School , he studied from 1952 at the College of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1956 . He then completed postgraduate studies at the College of Europe in Bruges in 1957 with a Master of Arts (MA). On his return to the United States, he served from 1963 to 1974 on the staff of John Blatnik , a longtime Democratic congressman from Minnesota. At the same time he was from 1971 to 1974 administrative director (administrator) of the Committee on Public Works (US House Committee on Public Works) , when Blatnik was its chairman.

1974 Oberstar eventually became the successor of the Blatnik member of the US House of Representatives voted and represented there to seventeen elections of 3 January 1975 to 3 January 2011 the 8th congressional district of Minnesota . Most recently, he was also Chairman of the US House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure . In this capacity, he also brought a later unanimously adopted bill to rebuild the St. Anthony Falls (35W) Bridge to replace the previous collapsed bridge.

Oberstar was also a member of the pro-life movement Democrats for Life of America .
