Democrats for Life of America
Democrats For Life of America (in German: Democrats for Life in America, short: DFLA) is an interest group of the Democratic Party in the United States . She is part of the right to life movement , which advocates a ban on abortion . To distance themselves from the "Pro-Life" Republicans , they call themselves "For-Life" Democrats because, unlike the "Pro-Life" Republicans, they also speak out against the death penalty and euthanasia ( assisted suicide ). However, the majority of the Democratic Party is in favor of abortions, which is why the Democrats for Life contradict the party line.
They invented the Pregnant Women Support Act , a comprehensive package of legislation . In this, among other things, policy proposals were drawn up to reduce the number of abortions. The DFLA is somewhere between the Christian left (progressive Christians) and the religious right (very conservative Christians), with a tendency towards the Christian left.
Intentions of the DFLA
According to the DFLA, the Democratic Party suffered in elections particularly from its position in favor of abortion . The DFLA focuses on opinion polls that confirm that the position on abortion in the Democratic Party has cost many religious US Americans, especially Catholics , Eastern Orthodox , Pentecostal , Baptists and other Protestant Christians , who hold almost all political positions support the party, but refuse to vote for Democrats because of their advocacy for abortion. The DFLA thus advocates the position of a broad spectrum of religious or "pro-life" Americans to support a democratic candidate who makes it his business to limit or restrict abortions in the United States through positive social programs and means break up.
Compare to the Democratic Party
The mission of the "Democrats For Life of America" differs from that of the national Democratic Party. At the federal level, the Democratic Party explicitly stands by its support for the right of women to opt for an abortion. From the 2004 Democratic Party Program:
"We will defend the dignity of all Americans against those who would undermine it. Because we believe in the privacy and equality of women, we stand proudly for a woman's right to choose, consistent with Roe v. Wade, and regardless of her ability to pay. We stand firmly against Republican efforts to undermine that right. At the same time, we strongly support family planning and adoption incentives. Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare. "
Both the national Democratic Party and the Democrats for Life of America are trying to reduce abortions . The stated intention of the national Democratic Party is legal access to abortions while reducing the number of abortions and supporting social programs. While the DFLA also guarantees support for the implementation of such programs, in particular the "Pregnant Women Support Act", they also strongly advocate so-called "For-Life" democrats who want to ban abortion nationally. This disagreement highlights a crucial difference between abortion advocates and the anti-abortion viewpoints: while both groups advocate reducing the number of abortions through social support, anti-abortion groups emphasize legal restrictions on abortion. Abortion advocate groups claim that abortions must remain safe, affordable, and legal. However, under the leadership of Howard Dean , the party has eased its previously adamant stance and began to support "for-life" Democrats.
