Nick Joe Rahall II (born May 20, 1949 in Beckley , West Virginia ) is an American politician . From 1977 to 2015 he represented the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives , until 1993 in the fourth, since then in the third congressional electoral district .

Career

Nick Rahall attended Woodrow Wilson High School in his birthplace Beckley and then until 1971 Duke University in Durham ( North Carolina ). Until 1972 he continued his education at George Washington University in the federal capital Washington . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1971 and 1974 he worked for US Senator Robert Byrd . In 1972 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach .

In the 1976 election Rahall was elected to the US House of Representatives in the fourth congressional constituency of West Virginia, where he succeeded Ken Hechler on January 3, 1977 and was confirmed in the following 18 elections. Since the electoral districts in West Virginia were redistributed in 1992, he represented the newly formed third district from January 3, 1993; Bob Wise moved to the second district. He became chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources in 2007 and was a member and vice chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He was also represented on three sub-committees.

In the 2014 election , he failed when trying to re- elect the Republican Evan Jenkins and resigned from Congress on January 3, 2015. He was a non-stop member of Congress for 38 years , longer than any other West Virginia MP.

Rahall is considered a moderate and rather conservative democrat.

Nick Rahall is married. Privately, he lives in Beckley, his birthplace.
