Blackburn B. Dovener
Blackburn Barrett Dovener (born April 20, 1842 in Teays Valley , Cabell County , Virginia , † May 9, 1914 in Glen Echo , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1907 he represented the first constituency of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Blackburn Dovener was born in Teays Valley in 1842, which was then part of the state of Virginia and later became part of the state of West Virginia, which was founded in 1863. He attended the public schools in his home country and worked as a teacher himself between 1858 and 1861. At the beginning of the civil war , at the age of 19, he set up a volunteer company himself. He then served as captain of a West Virginia infantry unit on the Union side during the war . In 1867 he became the captain of a steamship on the Ohio River . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to work in his new profession in Wheeling .
Dovener was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1883 and 1884 he was a member of the West Virginia House of Representatives . In 1890 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . Four years later he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first district of West Virginia , where he succeeded the Democrat John O. Pendleton on March 4, 1895 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1907. During this time, the Spanish-American War fell in 1898 , as a result of which the Philippines came into American possession. The former Kingdom of Hawaii also became part of the United States in 1898.
For the elections of 1906 Dovener was not nominated again by his party. After retiring from Congress, he worked again as a lawyer in Wheeling before retiring, which he spent in Glen Echo, Maryland.
