Early years and political advancement

Bob Wise attended Duke University in North Carolina until 1970 and then studied law at Tulane University in New Orleans . After he was admitted to the bar in 1975, he began practicing in West Virginia's capital, Charleston . Between 1980 and 1982, Wise was a member of the West Virginia Senate . As a member of the Democratic Party , he represented his home state in the US House of Representatives in Washington from 1983 to 2001 . Then the party nominated him in 2000 as their top candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election. Wise won this election with 51% of the vote against incumbent Cecil H. Underwood , who got 47% of the vote.

West Virginia Governor

Wise began his four-year term on January 15, 2001. First he had to deal with economic problems. These intensified in the months following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Wise managed to overcome the crisis by attracting new companies with the help of tax incentives and improvements in infrastructure. Governor Wise also promoted the school system in his country. A scholarship program has been designed to encourage high school and college students to complete their education in West Virginia instead of attending outside schools. In the medical field, there was a similar procedure for doctors. These were encouraged to settle in West Virginia with state incentives. A tax on tobacco products should benefit the health budget.

In 2003 the press reported that the governor was having an extramarital affair. Although this did not adversely affect his performance in office and his family forgave him, it cost him re-election in 2004. He originally wanted to run again that year, but decided not to do so after he encountered resistance in his own party because of the affair.
