Albert Blakeslee White (born September 22, 1856 in Cleveland , Ohio , † July 3, 1941 in Parkersburg , West Virginia ) was an American politician and from 1901 to 1905 the eleventh governor of the state of West Virginia.

Early years and political advancement

Albert White attended the public schools in Columbus and then Marietta College until 1878 . Then he became a journalist. He was owner and publisher of a newspaper in Lafayette ( Indiana ) before it after moving to Parkersburg in West Virginia from 1883 to 1889, the Parkersburg State Journal published.

White made his first political appearance as campaign manager for US Senator Stephen Benton Elkins . In 1889, White was appointed head of the federal tax service in West Virginia by US President Benjamin Harrison . In 1897 President William McKinley confirmed him in this office. In 1900 he was nominated by the Republican Party as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election, which he won against the Democrat John H. Holt with 53.8 percent of the vote.

Between 1921 and 1925 he was again head of the federal tax department of West Virginia; In 1927 he was elected to the State Senate, where he remained until 1931. Then he withdrew from politics. He died ten years later in Parkersburg. Albert White was married to Agnes Ward, with whom he had five children.
