Earl Ray Tomblin (born March 15, 1952 in Logan County , West Virginia ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and was governor of the state of West Virginia from 2010 to 2017 . After he had previously held the office of lieutenant governor since 2000 , he moved up through the election of Governor Joe Manchin in the United States Senate to his successor as governor.

Life

Earl Tomblin attended West Virginia University , where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. This was followed by an MBA from Marshall University ; he also studied at the University of Charleston . He has been married since 1979 and has one son. Marshall University also awarded him an honorary doctorate, as did the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College . After completing his training, Tomblin initially worked as a teacher and later as a businessman. He lives in Chapmanville with his wife .

His political career began with the election to the House of Representatives from West Virginia , where he stayed from 1974 to 1978. He then moved to the State Senate in 1980 , to which he has belonged continuously ever since. On January 11, 1995, he was promoted to President of this Chamber of Parliament. At 15 years in office, Tomblin is the longest-serving Senate President in West Virginia's history.

In 2000, a resolution of the state parliament created the post of vice governor as representative of the governor, with this task automatically falling to the incumbent president of the state senate. With the victory of Governor Manchin in the by-election for the mandate of the late US Senator Robert Byrd - Carte Goodwin had meanwhile been appointed a provisional successor - Tomblin's office was passed to Tomblin, who took his oath of office on November 15, 2010.

On January 18, 2011, the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia , the state's highest court, ordered a by-election to be held on October 4 of the same year. Earl Ray Tomblin prevailed in the primary of his party with 40.4 percent of the vote in front of Rick Thompson (24.1 percent), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Secretary of State Natalie Tennant (17.3 percent) and scored at the Election of the Republican Bill Maloney , a politically inexperienced businessman. The polls predicted a close result, but ultimately Tomblin succeeded in asserting himself with 50:47 percent of the vote. In 2012 he was elected for four years in the regular gubernatorial election. Tomblin did not run for the gubernatorial election on November 8, 2016. His Democratic successor Jim Justice ran for election . who then also won the election.
