Stanislaus A. James

Sir Stanislaus Anthony James (born November 13, 1919 in Soufrière , St. Lucia , † May 30, 2011 ) was a politician and Governor General of St. Lucia .

biography

After attending primary school in Soufrière, he continued his education from 1934 to 1939 at St. Mary's College , completing this with a Cambridge Senior Certificate . He then worked as a substitute teacher at St. Aloysius RC Boys School , before continuing his teaching degree at the Training College for Teachers in Trinidad and Tobago in 1940 . In December 1941 he completed this with the Trained Teacher's Certificate and after his return to St. Lucia in January 1942 he was trained assistant teacher in the college of the Soufrière Boys' Primary School . Subsequently, in June 1944, he was appointed supervisor for uneducated teachers in training. At that time he was the first supervisor and traveled by horse and canoe to the rural schools in the coastal towns of Canaries and Anse-la-Raye .

In 1945 he became head of supervision for the entire island at the education authority in Castries and also completed a distance learning course , which he obtained in 1946 with a Diploma of Associate from the College of Preceptors in London , making him the first Lucian to receive a diploma in education .

In the following years he became a key figure in the development of St. Lucia at the school board and was responsible for creating concepts and implementing youth development and community programs and projects leading to the establishment of youth clubs, sports and community centers and Playgrounds in St. Lucia led. In the course of his work as head of the school board, he dealt with probation programs, social welfare, community development, public relations and poor relief, thereby helping to establish and structure activities that are now part of the remit of the authority for humane services and the ministry of legal affairs.

He also played an important role in establishing the National Welfare Fund Plan, the forerunner of the Social Security Program of today's National Insurance Plan. His work was so important that he was called back from retirement in 1974 to help the government prepare a master plan for national disaster prevention and was also responsible for drafting the first nationwide national disaster plan.

On October 10, 1988, he succeeded Vincent Floissac as acting Governor General, before he held this office after his final appointment between 1992 and June 1, 1996. He was succeeded by George Mallet . In 1992 he was knighted as the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George .

The building of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and Forestry , the Sir Stanislaus James Building, is named after him .
