Sir George Mallet GCSL GCMG CBE (born July 24, 1923 in Castries , St. Lucia , † October 20, 2010 ibid) was a politician and Governor General of St. Lucia .

biography

Mallet was elected a member of the House of Assembly in a by -election in 1958 and represented the constituency of Central Castries there until 1996 . At the end of the 1950s he gained increasing importance as a politician and campaigned for St. Lucia sovereignty from the United Kingdom . Between 1958 and 1961 he was the only opposition member in the ten-member legislature.

In 1964 he formed an alliance of two opposition parties with John Compton , which led to the founding of the United Workers Party , the determining political force in St. Lucia for many years.

In the 1964 government of Chief Minister Compton, Mallet was not only Deputy Compton, but also Minister for Tourism, Trade and Industry. He held this office until July 1979, when the UWP was defeated in the first parliamentary elections after independence on February 22, 1979.

He held the offices of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Trade and Industry again from May 1982 to 1992. From 1992 to 1996 he was Minister for Foreign Affairs and Interior, as well as Minister for Trade and Industry.

On June 1, 1996, he was appointed Governor General of St. Lucia to succeed Sir Stanislaus A. James and was made Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George by Queen Elizabeth II . From then on he carried the suffix "Sir". However, he held the office of Governor General for just over a year until he was replaced by Pearlette Louisy on September 17, 1997.
