Romeo H. Freer

Romeo Hoyt Freer (born November 9, 1846 in Bazetta , Trumbull County , Ohio , † May 9, 1913 in Harrisville , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the fourth electoral district of the state of West Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

At the age of three, Romeo Freer came to Ashtabula County , Ohio, with his parents . There he attended public schools. Despite his youth, he became a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War . In 1866 he settled in Charleston, West Virginia, where he worked as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1868, Freer began working in his new profession. Between 1868 and 1871 he was first deputy and from 1871 to 1873 actual district attorney in Kanawha County . Between 1873 and 1877 he served as the American consul in Nicaragua . He was then from 1877 to 1879 in the New Mexico Territory Registrar of the Land Administration.

Freer was a member of the Republican Party . In the presidential election in 1884 he sat in Electoral College and voted for the losing candidate James G. Blaine . From 1882 Freer was based in Harrisville. In 1891 he was elected to the West Virginia House of Representatives. Between 1892 and 1897 he was a district attorney in Ritchie County ; from 1896 to 1899 he served as a judge in the fourth judicial district of his state.

In 1898 Freer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth district of West Virginia , where he succeeded Warren Miller on March 4, 1899 . In Congress , he completed until March 3, 1901 but only one legislative period. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Freer was Attorney General of West Virginia from 1901 to 1905 . From October 4, 1907 until his death on May 9, 1913, he was the postman of his home town in Harrisville. Romeo Freer was married to Mary Lams since 1884.
