He is considered a sharp critic of the Singaporean government, even if he recognizes the political achievements of the former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew , who "brought a good life to this small, resource-poor country".

At a trial in 2008, Lee Kuan Yew described him as "a liar, a cheater and all together an unscrupulous man" and as "almost psychopathic".

Because of the numerous lawsuits that were brought against him, he had to file for personal bankruptcy. Furthermore, a travel ban was imposed on him.

Singapore government response on political repression

The Singaporean government issued a press release on November 11th, 2009, about Chee Soon Juan's political activities, the defamation proceedings against him and his inability or unwillingness to bring himself to justice to defend the court cases involving actions that the government believes have fueled civil disobedience, and Chee's responses to all these judgments.
