Bruce Vento

Bruce Frank Vento (born October 7, 1940 in Saint Paul , Minnesota , †  October 10, 2000 there ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 2000 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bruce Vento attended Saint Paul public schools. In 1958 and 1959 he graduated from St. Thomas College there . This was followed by studies at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis , which he finished in 1961. He then studied at the University of Wisconsin until 1965 , before finishing his studies at the University of Minnesota in 1966. Between 1965 and 1976, Vento worked as a teacher in Minneapolis public schools. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party , which in Minnesota has been called the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party since a merger in 1944 . From 1971 to 1976 he was an MP in the Minnesota House of Representatives .

In the 1976 congressional election, Vento was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded Joseph Karth on January 3, 1977 . After eleven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on October 10, 2000 . For the elections in 2000 he decided not to run again. He died before the end of his last term on January 3, 2001.

Bruce Vento was committed to the environment. In 1986 he was also instrumental in the so-called McKinney – Vento Homeless Assistance Act . This law, which was also drafted by Republican Rep. Stewart McKinney of Connecticut , improved the situation of the homeless. Bruce Vento died of a rare type of cancer caused by asbestos poisoning called asbestos mesothelioma .
