John Gilfillan

John Bachop Gilfillan (born February 11, 1835 in Barnet , Caledonia County , Vermont , †  August 19, 1924 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1887 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Gilfillan attended public schools in his home country. In 1855 he graduated from Caledonia County Academy . He then moved to Minneapolis, where he temporarily worked as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1860, he began to work in this profession in his new hometown. Between 1860 and 1868 he was a member of the local education committee. He was also a trial attorney for the City of Minneapolis from 1861 to 1864. From 1863 to 1867 and again from 1869 to 1873 Gilfillan was District Attorney in Hennepin County .

Politically, Gilfillan was a member of the Republican Party . From 1865 to 1869 he was a member of the Minneapolis City Council; between 1875 and 1885 he was a member of the Minnesota Senate . From 1880 to 1888 he was on the board of directors of the University of Minnesota . In the congressional elections of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded William D. Washburn on March 4, 1885 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Edmund Rice in the following elections in 1886 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1887 .

After being voted out of office, John Gilfillan withdrew from politics. In the following decades he practiced as a lawyer. He died on August 19, 1924 at the age of 89 in Minneapolis, where he was also buried.
