Arlan Ingehart Stangeland (born February 8, 1930 in Fargo , North Dakota , † July 2, 2013 in Detroit Lakes , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1991 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Arlan Stangeland attended Moorhead High School in Minnesota until 1948 . Then he worked as a farmer. He served on the Barnesville Ward School Committee in 1976 and 1977 . Politically, Stangeland joined the Republican Party . Between 1966 and 1975 he was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives . From 1964 to 1968 he was a delegate to the respective regional party conventions of the Republicans in Minnesota.

After the resignation of MP Robert Bergland , who had been appointed US Secretary of Agriculture , Stangeland won the necessary by-election in the seventh constituency of Minnesota and moved into the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC on February 22, 1977 as Bergland's successor . After he was confirmed in his mandate in the following six regular elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1991 .

In the 1990 election, Stangeland lost to Collin Peterson . One reason for his electoral defeat was allegations of waste because he had billed too many private calls through Congress. Subsequently, Arlan Stangeland withdrew from politics.
