Louis E. Atkinson

Louis Evans Atkinson (born April 16, 1841 in Delaware Township , Juniata County , Pennsylvania , †  February 5, 1910 in Mifflintown , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1893 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Louis Atkinson attended public schools in his homeland. After a subsequent medical degree at the College of the City of New York and his approval as a doctor in 1861, he began to work in this profession. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army until 1865 in the medical service . He was injured himself and could no longer work as a doctor. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1870. He then began practicing this profession in Mifflintown. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1882 Atkinson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th  electoral district of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Horatio Gates Fisher on March 4, 1883 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1893 . From 1889 to 1891 he was chairman of the Ministry of Finance's Expenditure Control Committee. In 1892 he initially intended to run again and was also nominated for re-election by his party. However, he changed his mind at short notice and withdrew his application.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Louis Atkionson worked again as a lawyer. He was also the presiding judge in the 41st Judicial District of Pennsylvania for one year. He died on February 5, 1910 in Mifflintown, where he was also buried.
