Horatio Gates Fisher

Horatio Gates Fisher (born April 21, 1838 in Huntingdon , Huntingdon County , Pennsylvania , †  May 8, 1890 in Punxsutawney , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Horatio Fisher attended both public and private schools. In 1855 he graduated from Lafayette College in Easton . After that he worked in mining and shipping coal. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1862 and 1865 he sat on the local council of his hometown; from 1865 to 1868 he was an auditor in Huntingdon County. He served as mayor of Huntingdon from 1874 to 1876 before serving in the Pennsylvania Senate from 1876 ​​to 1879 .

In the congressional election of 1878 Fisher was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th  electoral district of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat William Stenger on March 4, 1879 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . From 1881 he was chairman of the Committee on Coinage, Weights, and Measures . In 1882 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Horatio Fisher resumed his previous activities. In 1888 he became a board member of the Huntingdon Reformatory. He died on May 8, 1890 in Punxsutawney and was buried in Huntingdon.
