Lemuel Amerman

Lemuel Amerman (born October 29, 1846 in Danville , Montour County , Pennsylvania , †  October 7, 1897 in Blossburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lemuel Amerman attended public schools in his home country as well as the Danville Academy . He then studied until 1869 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg . For the next three years he taught as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to work in this profession in Philadelphia . In 1876 he moved his residence and law firm to Scranton . There he also worked in the banking industry. In 1879 and 1880 he served as a lawyer for Lackawanna County . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1881 and 1884 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . He then served as Comptroller of the City of Scranton in 1885 and 1886 . He was then to 1887 secretary of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania .

In the 1890 congressional election , Amerman was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican Joseph A. Scranton on March 4, 1891 , whom he defeated in the election. Since he lost to Scranton in 1892, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Lemuel Amerman practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Blossburg on October 7, 1897 and was buried in Scranton.
